The Ministry of Showing Up

Sometimes the most powerful ministry is simply being present. How Clearwater Cruisin’ builds relationships one conversation at a time.
There’s a quiet kind of ministry that doesn’t need a pulpit, a program, or a plan. It doesn’t come with a schedule or a sign‑up sheet. It doesn’t announce itself. It doesn’t even look like “ministry” in the traditional sense.
It’s the ministry of showing up.
At Clearwater Cruisin’, that’s the heart of what we do. We drive, we walk, we talk, we listen. We meet people where they are — on sidewalks, at parks, in parking lots, at the marina, outside a gas station, or in the middle of a random conversation that starts with, “Hey, nice dogs.”
There’s no script.
There’s no agenda.
There’s just presence.
Presence Builds Trust
People open up when they feel seen. Not judged. Not analyzed. Just seen.
A simple “How’s your day going?” can turn into a story someone’s been carrying for years. A shared laugh can break through a week’s worth of loneliness. A moment of kindness can shift the whole tone of someone’s afternoon.
We’ve learned that most people aren’t looking for answers — they’re looking for connection. And connection starts with showing up.
Small Conversations, Big Impact
Some of the most meaningful moments we’ve had on the road weren’t dramatic. They were simple:
- A man at the bus stop who just needed someone to listen.
- A woman walking her dog who hadn’t talked to anyone all day.
- A teenager who asked about the cameras and ended up talking about his dreams.
- A neighbor who waved from across the street and ended up sharing a story that changed the way we saw the whole block.
These aren’t “projects.”
They’re people.
And every person matters.
No One Is Too Small to Notice
Clearwater is full of folks who slip through the cracks — not because they’re invisible, but because everyone’s in a hurry. When you slow down, you start to see the world differently:
- The man sleeping behind the plaza who just wants to feel safe.
- The elderly couple who walks the same route every morning.
- The workers who keep the city running long before sunrise.
- The families who gather at the marina to breathe for a moment.
Showing up means acknowledging them.
It means saying, “You’re part of this place too.”
A Ministry Without Walls
We don’t have a building.
We don’t have a congregation.
We don’t have a budget.
But we have a van, a camera, two dogs, and a calling to be present in the world exactly as it is.
Some days that means offering a smile.
Some days it means listening.
Some days it means helping someone carry their groceries.
Some days it means just being a steady presence in a world that feels anything but steady.
Love Looks Like Attention
The sermon at St. Alfred’s today talked about the “ministry of love” — not as a grand gesture, but as a daily practice. A way of living. A way of seeing.
That’s what Clearwater Cruisin’ tries to embody.
Not preaching.
Not persuading.
Not pushing.
Just loving people by paying attention to them.
One Conversation at a Time
We’re not trying to change the world in one sweep.
We’re trying to change the temperature of one moment.
A warm word.
A shared laugh.
A simple presence.
That’s the ministry of showing up.
And it’s the ministry we’re committed to — one drive, one walk, one conversation at a time.
